.HERE IS A SAMPLE FROM MY BOOK, "KISS THE GROUND" FOUND IN CHAPTER ONE: "LEAVING ON A JET PLANE"
“Come on Marcus, you’re going to be late! The taxi-driver has to take us all the way to the capital, and I am already nervous that you leaving me”, a middle aged woman yelled out to her favorite nephew. “But Auntie, this was a decision we (referring to my family) made together”, the young man responded. “I mean, it is a once in a lifetime dream. Me going to the States and all, and no one in the family has ever done it”, said the young man, giving his assessment of the situation. “Well, yes that is true, but do not ever forget your real purpose for going”, was the reply from Marcus’ aunt. And we both said it simultaneously, “to better yourself and get a good education”. “Yes Auntie”, I said, reflecting on the fact that it was not like Trinidad did not have a good education system. After all I know many people in my family who are educators and did very well right here in “TNT”. But we thought it would be best for me to go to the States and learn the trade of electrical engineering. Something that I wanted to do but the education system in Trinidad did not have such a program.
I could see Grandma’s tears rolling down her dried darken cheek bone. Her feeble right hand slightly extended in a gesture of goodbye to me. She has aged now. Not weakened by medical problems, no not my granny. Never! A woman who instinctively knew that this would be the last time she would ever see her favorite grandson."
